Classic carols

"ONE OF the highlights of my Christmas is the special candlelight concert by
the vocal ensemble Cantiones Sacrae in the beautiful St Salvadorís church in Dundee.
Itís such an atmospheric setting and made even more special in the light of more than 200 candles.
Cantiones Sacrae have built a loyal following across Tayside and for this concert they perform some
classic Christmas carols as well as works from the 15th Century to the present day.

"IF YOU'RE in the Dundee area and you really want to get into the Christmas spirit, I can highly recommend the concert by the renaissance group Cantiones Sacrae at St Salvadorís Church in the Hilltown. I went last year and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful singing by this hugely talented foursome. It made me remember what Christmas is all about and was light years from the commercialism of buying presents people donít want and getting enough food and drink to feed an army."

Article from the magazine of ST JOHN'S CHURCH, Forfar

St John's was incredibly lucky to be the venue for a concert of Renaissance music by Cantiones Sacrae, a group from Dundee. Their four unaccompanied voices filled the church for an almost magical hour-and-a-half with unutterable beauty.  I came away wondering two things: how our Puritan forebears could possibly have thought that music distracted from, rather than led to, the sublime and why with the purity, beauty and range of the human voice, we need instruments at all!
